Summary

The success of a hyperthermia treatment depends critically on the positioning and configuration of the hyperthermia applicators to ensure an optimal exposure of the designated treatment region. Novel computer simulation technology offers assistance in determining such ideal configurations. It has reached a level of realism and reliability that allows to model complex physical phenomena in realistic virtual anatomical setups. The emulation of a hyperthermia procedure is one aspect which has recently become feasible using cutting-edge computational modelling platforms. A treatment scenario can be virtually set up, simulated, and the predicted energy deposition and thermal distribution can be assessed. Subsequently the configuration is optimized ahead of the actual treatment. The Sim4Life platform is tailored for Life Science computation and offers a range of tools and functionalities, which can be employed for virtual applicator placement, exposure assessment, and optimization of hyperthermia. The workshop will comprise an introduction into the world of Computational Life Sciences with Sim4Life and an example of a hyperthermia treatment simulation.
